Where to eat in Circeo: the addresses we would recommend to a friend

Six real addresses in San Felice Circeo, from the port to the hinterland: what to order, how much you spend and when to book.

Dove mangiare a San Felice Circeo: gli indirizzi giusti

If a friend wrote to us "I'm coming to Circeo for a weekend, where should I eat?", we wouldn't send him a Tripadvisor ranking.

We would tell him to go to the port if he wants freshly unloaded fish, to go up to the historic center if he is looking for a real terrace, and to go as far as Borgo Montenero if he prefers a properly prepared meat dish.
San Felice Circeo is small (just over 10,000 inhabitants, which triples in summer), but in a few square kilometers it concentrates very different registers: from the tourist port to the village trattorias, up to the panoramic restaurants overlooking the cliff of the promontory. Here are the addresses that, based on what they really offer and not on how photogenic they are, deserve a stop.

The port, if you want freshly unloaded fish

The tourist port of San Felice Circeo, in Piazza Enrico Fabrizi, is the most natural starting point for those looking for the fish restaurants of Circeo: here the catch comes from the fish markets of the coast and the premises overlook the moorings directly, with the Circeo promontory seeming close at hand.

Barracrudo, the raw ham with a view of the Circeo

Terrace resting on the sand, direct view of Mount Circeo. The cuisine alternates raw seafood with cooked dishes: chopped red prawns, cuttlefish salad, but also more original proposals such as seafood tacos and scialatielli with swordfish and sheep's milk ricotta. Average receipt around 65 euros, good wine list. Reservation recommended especially on summer weekends.

La Locanda degli Artisti, oysters and raw fish on the port

Also on the port, with a veranda and around a hundred seats between the internal room and the garden. The strong point are the raw fish and the selection of oysters (including Fleur des Eaux and Marennes Oléron), then risotto with scampi, spaghettone with lobster and a classic but well-made fried calamari and prawns. It never closes for weekly rest, but on summer weekends booking is almost mandatory.

La Taverna del Porto, fish without frills

More direct cuisine: spaghetti with clams, fish soup, fried calamari and prawns. It's the right address when you don't want a starred restaurant but... sit overlooking the moorings and eat something that really tastes like the sea.

The promontory, for those looking for the real terrace

Going up towards Capo Circeo, the register changes again: here the restaurant is also a panoramic point.

The Lighthouse, the terrace overlooking the cliff

Next to the Capo Circeo lighthouse, a restaurant (also boutique hotel) with dining room overlooking the cliff: the windows are so close to the sea that splashes arrive on rough days. It is the place to keep in your pocket for a special dinner, not for a quick lunch: here the bill weighs as much as the view, but it is one of the few addresses in Circeo where the view is not an accessory to the dish, it is part of the dish.

The hinterland, honest prices and home cooking

A few minutes from the centre, towards Borgo Montenero, the register changes again: less sea view, more land-based Pontine cuisine and lighter meals.

At Erminio, home cooking at honest prices

Family restaurant in Via Montenero, far from the sea but not by its flavours: it offers both fish dishes and the classics of Roman cuisine (amatriciana, carbonara, cacio e pepe), with an average cost of 16-23 euros per person. It's the right address if you're traveling on a budget or if you're in Circeo with children who want pasta with tomato sauce more than raw seafood.

Antico Mulino, the local hoax

In Borgo Montenero, specialized in own-farm buffalo meat: here the jewel in the crown is the starter tasting, a tasting journey that is worth a visit even for those who are not regulars at buffalo meat. Average prices, one of the highest quality-price ratios in the area, good wine list.

Pizza, fried foods and take away: the locals' quick stops

You don't always want an hour and a half dinner: in San Felice Circeo there are also the addresses that residents really use for a quick pizza or lunch on the beach, and it is here that you see the less postcard-like part of Circeo.

Pizzeria Il Pachino, the historic pizza of Circeo

On Via Terracina, just outside the centre: simple, almost Spartan environment, but it is one of the most established pizzerias in the area, with light dough (a hybrid between Neapolitan and Roman) and crispy fried foods as an appetizer. Fair prices, but the flaw is known to all Circeans: finding a table without booking well in advance, especially on summer weekends, is almost impossible.

Uncle Emilio, the chip shop on the road to the sea

Diner, chip shop and pizza by the meter on one of the arteries that lead straight to the beach: the format is designed for those who leave the sea hungry and with little time. Fish dishes at affordable prices (average cost 12-20 euros per person), no frills, lots of traffic during peak summer hours.

Katiuscia, the fish take away for those who rent a house

Take-away fish shop and fish kitchen on Via Litoranea: it is the right address if you are in a rented house and you don't feel like cooking, but you still want to fresh fish cooked well, from frying to seafood. Family atmosphere, varied and abundant dishes to be enjoyed at home or directly on the veranda or under the pergola in front of the restaurant.

Things you maybe don't know

  • Circeo does not have as ancient a fishing tradition as one might think: the maritime vocation of the area is more recent than the agricultural one of the Agro Pontino, and this is why in many menus you find the same weight given to fish and land products such as buffalo mozzarella or caciotta pontina.
  • A dish you won't find elsewhere: the fish oxtail, a seafood reinterpretation of a classic Roman cuisine, typical of some local menus.
  • The right wine to accompany a fish dinner in Circeo is not necessarily a northern white one: here you can find bottles of Circeo DOC (red and white), as well as Malvasia Puntinata and Bellone, less well-known but consistent with the territory.

How much to spend and when to book

A complete dinner (buffalo mozzarella, a first course with seafood, a grilled fish and dessert) costs on average between 35 and 50 euros per person; rooms with a view of the port or the cliff easily go above this figure, especially in high season, when prices rise for everyone.

At the other extreme, a pizza or a takeaway remains under 20 euros per person: it's the difference between an occasion and a quick stop, and both have their place in a weekend in Circeo.
If your weekend falls between June and September, book at least 2-3 days in advance for the clubs on the port and for Il Pachino, which fills up even faster: they are the first to fill up on summer weekends. Inland trattorias and quick stops remain more flexible even last minute.

The common thread here is that the choice of restaurant also tells you what weekend you want to experience: if you are looking for the Circeo of postcards, focus on the port and promontory; if you want its less glossy soul, you can find it a few kilometers further upstream, between Borgo Montenero and its trattorias. The territory, between the promontory, the port and the National Park, offers both versions just a few minutes away from each other: it is one of the reasons why we continue to tell it, weekend after weekend.

If then Circeo stays with you and you want to compare it with the other sea we are talking about, in Where to eat in Finale Ligure you will find the same approach applied to Liguria: real addresses, not tourist guide advice.
And if the weekend at Circeo has not yet been decided in detail, in 48 hours at Circeo: the itinerary we would do again tomorrow find out how to organize the two days around these stops.
