A weekend in Liguria in autumn it has an advantage that does not exist in summer: the coast returns to those who live there. The beaches are empty, there are no parking spaces and the sea remains warmer than expected.
The point is not whether to start, but from where. Out of season not all of Liguria lives in the same way: some seaside resorts lower their shutters, other places enter their best moment. Here's how to choose, and how to fill two days without going in circles.
Because a weekend in Liguria in autumn is worth the trip
The first reason is the sea. In recent years, in Finale Ligure, the water has remained around 22°C in the first days of October and dropped to around 20°C at the end of the month; in November it varies between 20 and 18°C. In the evening, in October, the air drops to around 12°C: for a good part of the month the sea is warmer than the evening air.
The second is light. In October the hours of light are still around eleven, enough for a morning of walking and an afternoon by the sea. After the time change (October 25, 2026) the sun sets shortly after five: this must be taken into account when organizing your day.
The third, less obvious, concerns rain. October and November are among the rainiest months on the Riviera. This is not a reason to give up, but to choose a base that has a plan B just a few minutes away.
Where to go: three filters for the off-season weekend
Before the name of the place, it is worth looking at three things.
- A place that lives even in winter. Better a village with residents, shops and a weekly market than a resort created only for the bathing season, where in November you find half the places closed.
- A plan B within half an hour. Caves, museums, a historic center to explore even under an umbrella. If the weather changes, the weekend doesn't end.
- Arrive without stress. From Milan Centrale, direct Intercity trains to Finale Ligure Marina take around two and a half hours; by car it takes around two hours. On a two-day weekend, every hour of travel saved is an extra hour on site.
Applied to the coast, these filters almost always lead towards the western Savona area. The Cinque Terre remain beautiful even now, but in a short weekend they have to deal with less frequent trains from November and paths that change status often. If you have a few more days, ours long weekend in the Cinque Terre proposes an alternative itinerary.
Finale Ligure and Finalborgo: the right base for autumn
Finale Ligure responds to all three filters, because it is not just one place. It is made up of different souls just a few minutes from each other: Finalmarina with the seafront, Finalpia, Varigotti with the fishermen's houses on the beach and Finalborgo, the walled village about a kilometer and a half from the sea.
In autumn this distance becomes an advantage. The village remains inhabited and alive even when the beach is empty, and the sea can be reached on foot or by bike. Furthermore, October is one of the favorite months for outdoor enthusiasts: the paths are dry and little traveled, and the Finalese area has almost 200 crags and around 4,000 climbing routes.
It's the same reason why Bric44, our house for four people, is within the walls of Finalborgo: you walk out and you are immediately among alleys, shops and cafes. If you want to know what the village is like when the tourists leave, we talked about it in Finalborgo out of season.
What to do on a weekend in Finale Ligure in autumn
The village, first of all
Start from the Archaeological Museum of Finale, in the two fifteenth-century cloisters of Santa Caterina. From 16 September it follows winter hours: from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 12pm and from 2.30pm to 5pm. It tells of hundreds of thousands of years of human presence in the Finalese area, from the finds of Homo erectus to the Neanderthal.
Then go up to Castel Gavone, the fortress of the Del Carretto marquises that dominates the village: from Finalborgo you can get there on foot along the Strada Beretta in about twenty minutes. The guided tours inside follow a seasonal calendar (in 2026 they were held from January to June), but the climb is also valid just for the view of the Torre dei Diamanti and the valley.
The sea, when it's all yours
In the afternoon, descend towards Finalmarina and continue along the coast to Varigotti. In October, with the water above 20 degrees, a quick swim is still possible for those who are not sensitive to the cold. In November the walk remains, which with the empty beaches is another experience.
If you want to walk seriously, the Sentiero del Pellegrino between Noli and Varigotti is the most scenic choice. Distances, differences in height and variations can be found in the guide to 5 weekends of trekking and sea in autumn and in that on paths between Finale Ligure and Varigotti.
Sunday morning
Start slowly. To choose where, we collected our addresses in where to have breakfast in Finale Ligure. If the weekend falls at the beginning of the month, on the first Saturday and first Sunday Finalborgo hosts the antiques market in its squares, from 10am to 7.30pm.
If it rains: the caves
Plan B is a few kilometers away. The Caves of Borgio Verezzi, just beyond Finale, can be visited with a guide along a route of around 800 metres, with a constant temperature of around 16°C. They are considered the most colorful tourist caves in Italy, they are open from Tuesday to Sunday and the full ticket costs 10 euros.
A little further west, the Toirano Caves preserve footprints and handprints left around 14,400 years ago and a large accumulation of cave bear bones. In low season, from October 1st, it is advisable to book.
Tips for a weekend in Liguria out of season
- Choose the train, not just the time. Direct Intercity trains from Milan leave every two or three hours and between one direct train and another, the solutions with a change extend the journey by up to half an hour. Check the timetables before booking your departure.
- Check the alert, not just the forecast. In Liguria the regional weather warning may lead to the closure of paths and outdoor activities. A look the day before avoids unpleasant surprises.
- Call museums and caves. Winter hours are reduced and can change from one year to the next: a call is worth more than any online page, even this one.
- Plan your day around light. After the time change, walk in the morning and keep the afternoon for the sea and the village. On the trails, darkness comes sooner than you think.
- Wear shoes with good grip. The stone of Finale is limestone and becomes slippery with humidity, even on the steps of the village.
- Check the closures of the premises. Out of season many restaurants reduce their opening hours or go on holiday: call ahead, especially for Sunday dinner. The addresses where we go, with the closing days, are in where to eat in Finale Ligure.
Three things you probably don't know
- The cloisters of Santa Caterina, which today house the museum, were a prison for a century, from 1865 to 1965.
- The Borgio Verezzi Caves were discovered in 1933 by three boys from the village, who had followed the dry bed of a stream.
- In October the water in Finale is on average around 21°C, while at night the air drops to around 12°C: for the whole month, in the evening, the warmest place is the sea.
A weekend in Liguria in autumn works when you choose a base that lives all year round, have a plan B for the rain and let the light decide the day. The rest comes by itself: a village to wander around on foot, a sea to look at without crowds, a path almost just for you.
